How to contact DataAttendant, which browsers and files it works with, and answers to the questions people ask before and after they try it.

This page tells you how to reach us, and answers the questions people ask most often about DataAttendant.

How to contact us

Write to support@dataattendant.com. To help us answer, include:

  • your browser and its version;
  • what you did, step by step;
  • what you saw, such as the exact message on the screen.

Never send us a file, a value from a file, your passphrase, your recovery key, or your Protection keys. We do not need them to help you.

Before you write

In the application, the i beside a heading explains that part of the screen. Each message on the screen says what happened and what you can do next.

Browsers, files, and limits

  • Browsers: current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari.
  • Files: CSV files (.csv, .tsv, or .txt) up to 50 MB, and Excel workbooks (.xlsx) up to 25 MB.
  • Not opened: older Excel workbooks (.xls) and workbooks with macros (.xlsm). Save a copy as .xlsx without macros, and open that.
  • Saving to a folder: Chrome and Edge can save a batch of files straight into a folder. Firefox and Safari offer each file as a download instead.

General questions

What does DataAttendant do?

It helps you prepare a file before you share it with an AI service, a contractor, or a partner. It finds values that look sensitive, such as names, email addresses, and account numbers.

You decide what happens to each type of value. You can remove it, mask it, replace it consistently, round it, shift a date, or encrypt it so that it can be restored. You then see a preview and a check of what remains, and download a protected copy.

Which file types does it open?

CSV files (.csv, .tsv, or .txt) up to 50 MB, and Excel workbooks (.xlsx) up to 25 MB. It does not open older .xls workbooks or workbooks with macros.

Which browsers does it work in?

It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Saving a batch of files straight into a folder needs Chrome or Edge. Firefox and Safari offer each file as a download instead.

Do I need an account?

You can open a file, see the preview and the check of what remains, and restore values without an account. You need an account to export a protected copy.

Every account starts on the free Starter level, with 10 credits a month.

What is a credit, and when does DataAttendant use one?

A credit covers up to 10,000 records of a file. An export of 25,000 records uses 3 credits, because each started block of 10,000 counts.

Only the export of a protected copy uses credits. Opening a file, the preview, the check of what remains, restoring values, backups, and the history never do. An export that is canceled or fails uses none.

How do I contact support?

Write to support@dataattendant.com, with your browser, what you did, and what you saw. Never include a file or a value from one.

Before you decide

Does my file leave my computer?

No. Your file is read and protected in your browser. Its contents, its name, its column names, and its values are not sent to us or to anyone else.

The Service receives only what an account needs. That is your email address for signing in, a random ID for your account, your level, your credits, and your payment IDs.

How do I know it found everything?

You cannot be sure, and neither can DataAttendant. It finds values by rules and patterns, and it can miss a value, or one written in an unusual way.

That is why it shows you a preview and a check of what remains before you download anything. Read them, and decide before you share the copy.

Is the protected copy anonymous?

DataAttendant does not claim that a protected copy is anonymous or anonymized. A copy can still hold personal or confidential data. It may hold a value that was missed, a column you chose to keep, or a mix of values that points to one person.

Where you replace names with stand-ins, whoever holds your Protection keys can put the names back. You decide what the copy holds, and you check it before you share it.

Is it suitable for confidential data?

DataAttendant applies your rules on your computer, and shows what remains before you share. Your file is never sent to us.

It does not decide for you whether you may share a file, or with whom. You check each protected copy before you share it, as our terms of service say.

Can I get the original values back?

Yes, for the values you protected with a treatment that can be restored. The application says which treatments can. On the Restore page, paste the answer or open the returned file, and the original values are put back on your computer.

Values you removed, masked, rounded, or shifted cannot be put back.

What if I forget my passphrase or lose my Protection keys?

Your Protection keys are kept in your browser, encrypted with your passphrase. We never receive them, so we cannot recover them.

If you lose the passphrase and have no recovery key, nobody can restore the values. The same is true if the browser's data is deleted without a backup. Make a recovery key and a backup on the Saved data page.

Will it work with the AI service I use?

DataAttendant does not connect to any AI service. It writes a protected copy, and you share that copy the way you choose. When the answer comes back, you restore it on the Restore page.

What happens to my rules and my Protection Plans?

They are saved in your browser, and they are not sent to us. You can export a plan to a file, and open it again on another computer.

A later version will let paid levels store definitions on our server, encrypted in your browser with a key only you hold. It is not available yet, and our privacy notice will describe it before it starts.

Is my data used to train anything?

Your files and their values never reach us, so we cannot use them for anything. We receive only what an account needs: your email address, a random ID, your level, your credits, and the IDs of your payments.

What does it cost to try?

The Starter level is free, with 10 credits a month. One credit covers up to 10,000 records. Opening files, the preview, and restoring values use no credits.

Can I cancel?

Yes. A paid level stays until the end of the period you paid for, and then your account returns to Starter. See cancellation and refunds.
